Community Day & Clearing Sale

There was definitely movement at the Station in December for our community day and clearing sale! Typo was given a thorough clean up and all those items that we didn’t need anymore were put up for auction in a classic country clearing sale, conducted ably by the very generous Garry Nash of Garry Nash First National Real Estate.

We had over 170 lots and Garry donated his time, skill and commission to Evolve for over three hours on the day to bring in well over $6,000 from almost 100 registered bidders. There were a number of surprises on the day, none better than the McKay farm gate – volunteer Kevin Chalwell pulled this old wire gate from our scrap metal pile, instructing us to put it in the sale because “it might just bring a bit”… and bring in a bit it did - $105!

Our perennial favourites, the Rotary clubs, were in attendance too – the Rotary Club of Appin Park-Wangaratta with their delicious BBQ and the Shepparton Central lads there to do an official handover of our new ablution block to our CEO, Paul Stolz.

After the excitement of the sale, the real business of the day commenced, with our annual crosscut saw and sheaf tossing competitions…

Two of our Rotary clubs brought their exchange students with them for the day – Mana from Japan, and Lisa from Sweden – and both took an end of the saw to compete for the Community Challenge trophy. In the end two members from the Rotary Club of Shepparton Central took out the prize, followed by a representative from the Rotary Club of Melbourne North (with honorary Rotarian, our Chairman…).

Even our auctioneer and his team got in on the act, in both the crosscut sawying and the sheaf toss. The competition in the sheaf toss was tight this year, with our 2008 champions (and Evolve staff) Chris Ziebell & Merri Greenwood having to really work for their trophies this year! Mel O’Donohue was pushing Merri until her throw landed the sheaf ON the cross-bar; and we were all surprised to see city newcomer, Gavin Lewis of the Rotary Club of Melbourne North give old hand Chris a run for his money!

Thank you very much to all the people who made the day a fantastic success, including but by no means limited to the Evolve staff, our amazing volunteers, Garry Nash & his staff, Primerano and King River Estate wineries and the Rotary Clubs.
