Typo Station's Amateur Sheaf Tossing & Crosscut Saw Championships - The How To Guide
To help you prepare for taking part in our Sheaf Tossing and Crosscut Saw events at Typo Station's Open Day, we've gotten our past champs to share some of their tips and experiences. If you're not sure what sheaf tossing & crosscut sawing is, you can take a look at the videos below, and see how the professionals do it! You can also view our Typo Hall of Fame for a bit of inspiration here.
Gavin, from St Kilda, has won the Community Challenge Sheaf Tossing Trophy for the Rotary Club of North Melbourne two years running, and in 2010, also took out the overall title, unseating Evolve's own Chris Ziebell after three years on the Honour Board!
| Tips for Top Tossers
* Focus on what is achievable, instead of "OMG, that bar looks high!" * Don't panic & don't try to increase effort as the bar height increases, and the participant field narrows * Be controlled in the throw, and visualise that the sheaf is going over the bar * Feel good that the crowd is watching and have fun |

A participant in our first Young Women's Program represented Evolve very successfully in 2010, taking out several titles, including the Father-Daughter saw with dad, Bob, and partnered with Gavin (above) to help him take home the Community Challenge Crosscut Trophy. Here are Allana's thoughts on how to get through that log the quickest...
| Allana's Ideas on Top Notch Sawing...
* Pull it! Don't push it, or it'll bend * Work in synch with your partner * Start off slow - get used to the feel, then you get a deeper cut, you can saw deeper and really go for it! |

One of Evolve's former directors, Mark, took out the City Sawyers title in 2010 with wife Clare. The City Sawyers competition is open to visitors who reside within 50km of Melbourne's CBD. Aside from being very proud that this event was taken out by one of the immediate Evolve family, we think Mark's tips are very useful for future competitiors!

The Story of Our Success... We owe our success to Grandpa's Shed, where I spent countless hours as a kid, fashioning everything from rifle stocks to artefacts, to garden furniture, using bandsaws, hacksaws, handsaws, jigsaws... Not bad for an 8 year old! Knew it would all come in handy one day, just didn't know that day would be 36 years later, at Typo! So if you spent your childhood in Grandpa's shed too, I reckon you've got it made. If not, we recommend: * nice B&B the night before - a hearty breakfast for carb-loading and sustenance (the logs at TYpo are big 'uns!) * Getting lost en-route from Beechworth and 4WDing it off the beaten track - teaches you adaptability if the saw sticks (which it does) The odd sheaf toss in advance - to limber up and loosen the muscle groups (after 40, fast twitch muscles ain't so fast!) * An unabiding belief in the ying & yang (getting someone to pull when you push isn't as easy as it sounds!) There you have it, our four-step recipe for success - happy sawing and good luck! |
