Initial Applications

A Young Men’s Program application form must be completed and submitted by the given deadline for the relevant intake. The application form requires input from the young man himself, as well as his parent or guardian, with provision for comments from teachers, counselors and/or youth workers involved with him.

NOTE TO APPLICANTS: We understand that as parents or carers of these young men, you are anxious to have your application succeed, but staff cannot advise you on the status of your application. Applicants will be contacted two weeks after the application deadline to advise of interview or recommend a later intake – please do not contact Evolve regarding applications prior to this date.

FOR AGENCIES: Please make a note in your calendar to contact Evolve at the end of each financial year to ensure your YMP Application Forms are the most recent.

Family Interviews

Once all application forms have been received, the Intake Team will assess each application and schedule an interview time for those most suitable for our program. Interviews are conducted with the young man and his parent/s or guardian, and other relevant individuals where requested (for example, a teacher, school counselor, psychologist, youth worker, police liaison) both as a group and separately. After the interviews, applicants who are deemed to be suitable for that particular intake will be invited to take part in the first week of the Young Men's Program.

My young man has been invited to take part in the Young Men's Program - what now?

What your young man needs to take:

The Intake Worker team will provide you with a comprehensive list of items that your young men will need at Typo Station.

PLEASE NOTE: Hiking and camping clothes and equipment will be provided

What role do I play in the program?

  • Weekend Visits - The young men will return home twice during the initial five-week residential to try out his new skills in his usual environment. Aside from arranging to collect your young bloke from the relevant station or location, he will reallly need and value your support on these visits back home.

  • Celebration Day - The final day of the five-week program is your boy’s chance to show off ‘his’ Typo Station – friends, family, teachers and other important people in his life are welcomed to the Station to celebrate his amazing achievements. Supporters meet with our Youth Worker Team first in Whitfield where our staff discuss the previous five weeks and what parents particularly are likely to see in the short term following the program. After this meeting, the group drives a short distance to Typo Station, where the boys welcome them and conduct a tour of the Station.

  • It is very important for you to - as a parent, a teacher, a youth worker, police officer or other supporter - take part in this day. Marking positive milestones is very important in the Young Men's Program and your being there for this substantial one will mean a lot to your young fella, whether he shows it on the outside or not...

  • Parent's Dinner - In the weeks following the residential experience, Evolve hosts a dinner for parents and guardians. The dinner involves a sharing of stories about the residential experience by our Youth Workers and gives parents a chance to build support networks with families in similar circumstances to themselves. Evolve believes it is very important for families with young men experiencing difficulties to feel well supported and that they are not alone.

Getting your young bloke to Typo Station

Our preference is that the young men make their own journey to the station. We recommend using V/Line services (train and/or coach) to reach the Wangaratta train station, where our staff will collect participants in our 4WD troop carriers.
For information about V/Line timetables, routes and services, you can visit their website at www.vline.com.au or call them on 136 196.

What are the Criteria for the Young Men's Program?

There are a number of criteria that applicants must meet to be eligible for participation in the Young Men's Program:

  • He must live in Victoria
The follow up support is very significant in the young man’s transition from Typo Station, and accessibility is key to that support. Evolve is unable to provide adequate support to young men living outside of Victoria.
  • He must be aged at least 14 and under 18 at the commencement of the program
This age group ensures that the potential age difference between our oldest and youngest participant is not so great that it creates difficulties in team interaction, communication and program delivery.
  • He must be currently or recently connected to an education or employment environment
Our program is structured to succeed only with the cooperation of schools or employers – if young men are not connected to one of these environments, our program has less chance of producing the long term impacts the young men require.
  • He must be residing in or have access to long-term, stable accommodation
See above notes on education and employment.
  • Any criminal offences must be of a minor and non-violent nature
  • He must not have any serious or ongoing substance abuse issues
We do not have the facilities or resources to attend to issues associated with dependency and withdrawal. There are a number of programs available for young men suffering addiction and relevant issues; please visit the ‘’If We Can't Help, You Might Like to Try...’’ page for more details.
  • He must weigh at least 36kg
While this one may seem a little unusual, this lower weight limit is to ensure that young men in the program are physically capable of participating in the nine-day hike, during which they are required to carry considerable packs of equipment.
  • He needs to have a physical ability that will allow him to safely participate in an active program, or a willingness to work towards this prior to beginning the intake
The program is physically demanding, and although it is not a necessity to be remarkably fit, a level of fitness is important to safely participate in the program.

If we can't help, you might like to try...

How much does it cost?

For each young man commencing the program, Evolve request a contribution of $1,130 to help cover the costs incurred across the two years of the program. Evolve can establish payment plans and scholarships may be available – please contact our administrative team to discuss your options.

My young man may benefit from something a bit different - where else can we look at?

There are many reasons why your young person may not be suitable for our Young Men’s Program – age, disability, location to name a few. If Evolve’s programs are not the right fit for your young man, the programs in the 'If We Can't Help' document may be a good alternative.
